ROWAN VAN AS — East Village View Fruit Exchange
ROWAN VAN AS (°1991, NL) lives and works in Rotterdam, www.rowan.hotglue.me
The art practice of Rowan Van As consists of installations, sculptures, performances and videos. He intervenes in public space through actions inspired by Dada and Cabaret. His performance series ‘Antwerp City you’re so pretty’ are small concerts, happening in non-places such as busy crossroads and street corners. Similar to a troubadour Rowan Van As sings about the uniqueness of this city. One of the instruments is a small organ, hidden in a giant clamshell.
The East Village View Fruit Exchange was an installation, a décor inspired on a found image of a fruit store in New York. The reconstruction of this shop in wood, cardboard and actual fruits inspired Rowan Van As to come up with several ‘characters’ in his live show such as the Newspaper Boy and the Ultra Orthodox Jew. Rowan Van As played with the well-known chauvinism of the inhabitants of Antwerp, who consider their city at least the same or even bigger than New York.

The Living Room XL was a group exhibition in the form of a happening. Sixteen artists were invited to create new work, culminating in fourteen unique 30-minute interventions questioning city life, the border between public and private space and the influences of global politics. The Living Room XL is part of AIR Traces: the experimental archive of AIR Antwerpen’s activities.
