JELLE SPRUYT (°1979, B) lives and works in Antwerp, www.jellespruyt.com

The art of Jelle Spruyt is a total sensation existing out of costumes, decors, sculptures, performances, sounds, smells and tastes. His works immerse us in an alienating, but not threatening, utopic world. Here origin, gender and political colors play redeemable roles and are interpreted in playful ways. Recently Jelle Spruyt focuses more on the use of textile in his installations and the reactions with ice and washing powder.

In his performance for The Living Room XL Jelle Spruyt hung several textiles on a drying rack and covered them with color pigments, ice and powder. The ritual was repeated three times and in the end the drying rack turned into a totemic sculpture. Jelle Spruyt turned into a master of ceremonies, who controlled and executed the ritual.

The Living Room XL was a group exhibition in the form of a happening. Sixteen artists were invited to create new work, culminating in fourteen unique 30-minute interventions questioning city life, the border between public and private space and the influences of global politics. The Living Room XL is part of AIR Traces: the experimental archive of AIR Antwerpen’s activities.

THE LIVING ROOM XL is an initiative of AIR antwerpen in collaboration with Studio Start and Brandt vzw, with financial support from Stad Antwerpen, Provincie Antwerpen and the Flemish Community. This website and its content is courtesy of the artists and AIR Antwerpen 2017. Photos © 2017 Alena Schmick, film © 2017 Ilke De Vries, design by Indianen
